Options for SQL Server 2014 End of Support
As of July 9, 2024, Microsoft will no longer offer support for SQL Server 2014. Here are your options to maintain security and compliance:
1. Do Nothing
This option leaves your system unsupported and vulnerable to security risks.
2. Migrate to a Newer Version
Upgrade to the latest version of SQL Server to benefit from ongoing support and new features.
3. Migrate to Azure and Receive Extended Security Updates (ESU)
Move your SQL Server 2014 to Azure and receive three years of free Extended Security Updates (ESU), a cost-effective solution for continued security.
4. Buy Extended Support through the Traditional ESU License
Purchase ESU licenses through your licensing agreements, such as EA, EAS, SCE, MPSA, or CSP, on a per-core basis with a minimum of 4 cores per server or VM. For cost savings, SCE agreements offer a 5% discount on standardized workloads.
5. Buy Extended Support through Azure Arc
Azure Arc offers a flexible, monthly ESU licensing model, enabling ESU access for servers connected with Azure Arc. For SQL Server, the Azure Arc ESU model is comparable to the traditional ESU license but can save up to 15%.
Key Considerations
- License Eligibility: Software Assurance (SA) or an equivalent subscription is required to purchase ESU, except for license-included services from CSP-Hosters.
- Automatic ESU Installation: On Azure, VMs configured for updates automatically receive ESUs. For on-premises or hybrid setups, ESUs can be installed via multiple activation keys in the M365 Admin Center or through Azure Arc-enabled servers.
Maximize Your Savings with Azure
Migrating to Azure enables three years of free ESUs for SQL Server 2014 and 2012 and Windows Server 2012. Don’t forget to explore license options like Azure Hybrid Benefit for additional savings when migrating databases to Azure.
